Why TCNJ Chemistry?
Our students learn the art and science of Chemistry in an environment of high expectations and strong personal support. Our faculty members are teacher-scholars. Not only do they teach chemistry, they do chemistry, publishing their research in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, they pursue this research with you! More than 80% of our students engage in undergraduate research under the mentorship of a faculty member. Combine this with state-of-the-art teaching laboratories and exceptional scientific instrumentation and you have a recipe for successful careers in science, industry, the health professions, and education.
So how does TCNJ Chemistry stack up against other programs? One objective measure of the quality of an undergraduate Chemistry program is the percentage of its undergraduates who go on to complete their Ph.D.’s in Chemistry. By this metric, TCNJ’s Department of Chemistry is one of the best programs in the nation.
Does that mean that admission to TCNJ’s Chemistry program is extremely competitive?
No. It means we have a great program! In 2019, TCNJ admitted more than half of the students who applied as Chemistry majors.
What if I want to pursue a career in a health-related field?
TCNJ’s Department of Chemistry has placed >95% of its graduates in professional schools (Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Podiatry) in the last 10 years.
Is teaching high school chemistry an option?
Absolutely! You can pursue a dual degree in secondary education and still graduate in 4 years. Our graduates often receive multiple offers.
What if I want to work in industry after I graduate?
TCNJ lies midway between New York and Philadelphia, in the middle of “Pharmaceutical Alley”. This area is also home to many other “chemical companies”, including flavor and fragrance manufacturers, cosmetic companies, materials manufacturers, and chemical/environmental testing companies. Nearly 100% of our majors seeking jobs in industry find one within 6 months of graduation.
