The TCNJ Chemistry Department welcomes transfer students from two-year institutions. If you are currently enrolled at a NJ institution, please be aware there are articulation agreements that determine whether the course you take at community college will count as either a specific TCNJ course for the major, or as “elective credit” (meaning that it will only count towards TCNJ’s minimum credit requirement for graduation).
Transferring to TCNJ
To ensure the smoothest transition possible to TCNJ as a declared Chemistry major, we recommend that students complete at least three of the following two-semester course sequences at their 2-year institutions:
- General Chemistry I → General Chemistry II
- Calculus I → Calculus II
- Physics I → Physics II (both calculus-based)
- Organic Chemistry I → Organic Chemistry II
We highly recommend that students take both semesters of a sequence. Students must complete both the lecture and associated laboratory to receive credit for these courses [otherwise you will need to retake the entire course at TCNJ!]. If choosing between completing the physics or organic chemistry sequence at community college we recommend enrolling in physics, since the organic chemistry sequence at TCNJ will provide you with an excellent introduction to both our curriculum and faculty.
Biochemistry specialization
If you are considering majoring at TCNJ with a Biochemistry specialization, we recommend that you consider completing the first year general biology course sequence at your 2-year institution (in all cases these two courses will only transfer as the first semester of TCNJ’s general biology course sequence, see more about biology course transfer credits, below).
NJ Community Colleges
Specific recommendations for several NJ community colleges are provided below. For further information on determining transfer credit, refer to the NJ Transfer website and for information on transferring to 4-year chemistry programs, please refer to the recommendations provided by the American Chemical Society.
Students transferring from a two-year college will receive a maximum of 66 credits (16.5 Units) transfer credits from TCNJ. Please note that TCNJ recognizes a student as a Junior Level at 64 credits (16 Units).
Each drop down section contains a table with three columns:
- Community college course number;
- Transfer eligibility towards the TCNJ chemistry major;
- Corresponding TCNJ course number and name;
Below the table is a key for all the special characters. Keys are unique to each table.
