President Gitenstein Congratulates TCNJ Scholar-Athletes

The College of New Jersey President R. Barbara Gitenstein invited seniors Liz Johnson (Chemistry) and Jake Weiss to her office to congratulate each student-athlete for their academic excellence during their tenure at TCNJ. Weiss and Johnson were joined by Dr. Sharon Beverly, assistant vice president for student affairs and executive director of athletics and recreation.

16541Johnson, a women’s cross country and track & field standout, was awarded the Dr. Harold W. Eickhoff Outstanding Senior Female Scholar-Athlete award. An all-conference performer who contributed to four New Jersey Athletic Conference championships during her career, Johnson is a chemistry major (BS ACS-certified track with research) and boasts an overall grade point average of 3.989.

Weiss, a defensive lineman for the Lions’ football team, received the Dr. Harold W. Eickhoff Outstanding Senior Male Scholar-Athlete award. A starter who compiled 22 tackles that included a pair of sacks, Weiss is a finance major and carries an overall grade point average of 3.917.The women’s cross country team was also honored this spring, receiving the Dr. R. Barbara Gitenstein Team GPA Award. The award is presented to the team who best showcases a complete group effort in joining together to achieve the highest team mark. The women’s cross country team combined to post a team GPA of 3.617, while also winning the

2014 NJAC title.In addition to the major awards, 134 student-athletes were recognized as ‘TCNJ Scholar-Athletes’ for maintaining a 3.3 cumulative average or better, while playing a varsity sport.The individual awards are named in honor of former college president Dr. Harold W. Eickhoff. The team accolade is in honor of TCNJ’s current president.
