WRI 102 Placement & Exemptions
WRI 102/Academic Writing is the college’s required writing instruction course. Students are exempt from the course through SAT, ACT or AP scores. The following scores will place students out of WRI:
- SAT scores of 580 or above in BOTH math and critical reading (Our data on TCNJ students indicates that high reading scores matched by high math scores are more effective predictors of college writing proficiency than reading scores alone.)
- An ACT composite score or 26 or higher
- An AP score of 4 or higher in English Literature, English Composition, US History, or World History.
Students who are exempt do not receive credit for the course, but their PAWS account will show this requirement as satisfied. If students do not have the scores listed above, or you did not submit SAT scores, they are required to take our Writing Placement test. Students must pre-register for this test on this website in mid-May. Each incoming class is notified by the Office of Records and Registration about placement dates and details. The Placement Exam is offered only on specified dates in May and June and, if necessary, a make-up date in August. Placement cannot be done on a rolling basis.
Some students’ scores on this test and/or their SAT scores indicate the need for additional assistance, as early as the Fall semester while taking their First Seminar (FSP). These students will be enrolled in a two-credit writing studio course (WRI 101/Writing Studio) that works in conjunction with the FSP.
Transfer Students may be exempt from taking WRI 102 if, at your previous institution, you have taken a credit-bearing course (numbered 100 or above) in writing or composition, which has been approved as equivalent to WRI 102.
First Seminar Program (FSP)
The FSP is now a stand-alone requirement and does not fulfill any major requirements. Students choose six topics, and then are placed into one of those sections. Students in the Bonner, Honors, and W.I.L.L. programs have specific sections available to them.
Information Literacy
This requirement is completed through IDS 102, an online, non-credit course graded pass/fail. The course is accessed through Canvas.
Second Language
Students must demonstrate proficiency in a second language at the 2nd level based on placement. If placed out of the 101 level due to transfer, test, or placement, they must complete courses at the 102 and 103, if language previously studied is continued.
Liberal Learning Breadth Requirement
The Liberal Learning Breadth Requirement provides knowledge in three broad sectors: Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Quantitative Reasoning. Each of the three broad sectors of human inquiry is sub-divided into two domains as follows:
Broad sector 1– Arts and Humanities
Domain 1.a. | Literary, Visual and Performing Arts– LVPA |
Domain 1.b. | World Views and Ways of Knowing– WVWK |
Broad sector 2– Social Sciences and History
Domain 2.a. | Behavioral, Social or Cultural Perspectives– BSCP |
Domain 2.b. | Social Change in Historical Perspective– SCHP |
Broad sector 3– Natural Science and Quantitative Reasoning
Domain 3.a. | Natural Science– NS |
Domain 3.b. | Quantitative Reasoning– QR |
Three courses required for the Chemistry major can be used to satisfy the Natural Science and Quantitative Reasoning course requirement (PHY and CHE courses are NS, MAT courses are QR). The remainder of the requirement depends on the year of matriculation:
Students beginning at TCNJ before Fall 2015. Students complete one class in LVPA, one class in WVWK, one class in BSCP, one class in SCHP, one course in LVPA or WVWK, and once class in BSCP or All First Year Seminar sections are designated as meeting one of the six domains, and, therefore, fulfill one of these requirements.
A searchable list of all courses that satisfy the liberal learning requirement (excluding Natural Science and Quantitative Reasoning courses), along with their corresponding sector and domain designators can be found at: http://liberallearning.tcnj.edu/approved-liberal-learning-courses/ |
