Chemistry majors Marielle Smith and Joselle McCracken presented the results of their summer research with Dr. Donald Hirsh at the 12th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium held at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The students’ research was conducted under the auspices of TCNJ’s Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience (MUSE), and their work was supported by grants from Bristol-Myers Squibb and Merck/American Association for the Advancement of Science.
This year’s symposium attracted approximately 190 poster presentations and over 300 undergraduate biology and chemistry researchers from colleges and universities up and down the East Coast. The winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Dr. Peter Agre, delivered the welcoming lecture.
Marielle Smith presented her poster titled “Phosphorescence of Covalently Attached EDTA-Tb(III) on DNA Duplexes” and Joselle McCracken presented her poster titled “Modeling Nitroxide Spin-Label Conformations on DNA Scaffolds.” Ms. McCracken received special recognition for her presentation at the closing ceremonies of the symposium.
