Chemistry Career Café Series

The College of New Jersey, Rider University, and the American Chemical Society are proud to announce our Chemistry Career Café Series. The goal of the Career Café Series is to introduce all students, from high school to graduate school, to the wealth of professional opportunities for chemists available right here in Central New Jersey and Philadelphia.  But unlike other career workshops, this series of four themed luncheons will focus on careers that are less traditional and not as well-known as medicine and pharmaceuticals—but still require a Bachelors or even advanced degree in chemistry.

Schedule:

Luncheons will be held on various Saturdays mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

  1. Chemistry of Food & Beverage – October 15, 2011
Register by Oct. 9, 2011  | View Announcement
Invited speakers include a local food chemist, flavor chemist, fragrance chemist, dairy biochemist, food standards technologist, chef, wine chemist, and brewer.
  2. Chemistry of Art & Literature – October 29, 2011

Invited speakers include a local museum curator, art conservationist, medical writer, science reporter, science writer, and chemistry librarian, and chemical database manager.
  3. Chemistry in the Government – Spring 2012 TBA
Invited speakers may include chemists from the USDA, FDA, NIH, US Pharmacopeia, NIST, Walter Reid Army Medical Center, and US Patent Office, NRL, EPA, and DOE.
  4. Chemistry in the Environment – Spring 2012 TBA
Invited speakers may include geologists, meteorologists, gemologists, atmospheric chemists, and hydrologists.

Series Details:

In the first two hours, chemists will discuss their career paths, and how they use chemistry on a daily basis.  The last hour will serve as a networking lunch, wherein professionals will speak directly with students in an informal setting, providing valuable insight into a particular career of interest, possible internship information, and later would ideally serve as a reliable contact as the student pursues that career in the future.

Registration:

Students must register for each café they wish to attend, by the dates listed above.  During registration, you will be asked to choose three professionals who you would like to personally speak with over lunch.  Use the speaker biographies to help you decide.  We will do our best to pair you with one of your top three choices.   Pre-registration is required.
